A continuing education course sponsored by the Michigan Chapter of the American Fisheries Society.  Instructed by Dr. Daelyn Woolnough, Dr. David Zanatta, and Amanda Chambers from Central Michigan University Biology Department and Institute of Great Lakes Research.

Course Description – Participants will learn characteristics, sampling techniques, and proper documentation techniques for the freshwater mussels in Michigan (Family: Unionidae). The workshop will include a classroom day that will be a hands on look at shells and their characteristics and a second day in the field to translate the knowledge learned in Day 1 to field experience. There are over 40 species of unionids found in Michigan and participants will learn how to differentiate and identify these unique and imperiled organisms.

Where – Day 1 – Quality Suites Lansing. 901 Delta Commerce Drive, Lansing, MI 48917. Day 2 – Belle River, near Marine City. Field site subject to change. Field site confirmation/directions will be provided on Day 1.

When – Tuesday, September 15th from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Wednesday, September 16th from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Class will meet at the field site on Wednesday.

Meals – Lunch will be provided on Tuesday. You will need to pack your own lunch on Wednesday.

What to Bring – Participants are invited to bring their own field collections. Participants will need to bring appropriate field gear that would include chest waders or a wetsuit and raingear (if necessary). Polarized sunglasses are also helpful.

Cost – $75 for students, $150 for professional MIAFS members, $175 for professional non-MIAFS members (non-members can save a few bucks by joining the Chapter for $10 before registering). Registration fee will include a copy of “Photo Field Guide to the Freshwater Mussels of Ontario”.
